How to measure your dog’s neck
Measuring your dog’s neck may seem like a small detail, but it ultimately determines how a collar fits, moves and looks when worn. Many dogs wear collars that are not quite the right fit, without it being immediately noticeable. A little too much room, slight shifting while walking, pressure in the wrong place, or a strap that is slightly too narrow or too wide for the dog’s build. Small differences, but exactly where fit makes all the difference.
Fortunately, measuring itself is quite simple.
We always measure the neck where the collar will actually sit. Not high up towards the head and not low near the shoulders, but right in between, on the part of the neck where the collar naturally falls. You can use a measuring tape, but a piece of string works just as well, as long as you measure it afterwards.
When measuring, it is important to leave a small amount of space. By keeping approximately two fingers between the neck and the measuring tape, you prevent the collar from becoming too tight and ensure that it moves comfortably without shifting.
With this circumference in centimeters, you can then choose the right size using our size chart.
You will notice that our sizes overlap. We have done this intentionally, so you are not limited to one exact outcome and there is always a size available that suits your dog’s build.
It may also be the case that you already have a specific collar in mind, for example from a certain collection, and that it fits slightly larger while your dog is still growing. In that case, it is possible to have the collar adjusted by adding an extra hole, so you can use it straight away without compromising on fit.
For our martingale collars, an additional measurement is needed. Because these collars are slipped over the dog’s head, you should measure not only the neck circumference, but also the circumference of the head at its widest point. This ensures that the collar slides smoothly over the head and then fits properly around the neck.
At PUNQ, we work with materials designed for everyday use. BioThane has the look of leather, but does not absorb moisture, stays flexible and is easy to clean. Combined with sturdy hardware and a proper fit, this creates a collar that not only fits well, but also stays beautiful in use. That is why we also offer a one-year warranty on materials and construction.
Not every dog fits perfectly within a standard size, which is exactly why we also offer custom sizing. By taking your dog’s specific proportions into account, we create a fit that not only feels better, but also looks more balanced overall.
Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to discuss the custom sizing options.
